This subject provides provides an overview of professional and contractual responsibilities of a quantity surveyor in the consultant group from the design stage to the final account stage. It will focus on the importance of a clear understanding of the organization and administration of quantity surveyor practices and the legal and contractual procedures in relation to building procurement

Objectives:


This subject enable me to appreciate the role of quantity surveying profession in public and private sectors and understand the appointment and the roles of quantity surveyor in the pre-contract and post-contract stage, tendering methods and procedures, evaluation and reporting of tenders and contract choices. Furthermore, it develop awareness of the provisions of the Standard Contract forms related to construction period, insurances, Liquidated and Ascertained Damages, performance bonds, retention sums and other clauses forming basis of contract. This will be usable for us in order to become a successful Quantity Surveyor in the future.


Learning Outcome:

Through the study of this subject, I will be able  define the qualifications (academic and professional) required of a Quantity Surveyor, its professional Institution and Board and describe the duties of a Quantity Surveyor.Besides that I will be able to identify the roles of various parties involved in the building team and their construction contracts and contractual obligations.Furthermore , I will be able to evaluate the array of construction contracts between the client and the main contractor and the array of construction contracts between the main contractor with the sub- contractor.

1.) To learn the knowledge of Interim Certificate, Extesion of Time, Loss and Expenses, Indemnity and Penultimate Certificate.
2.) To enable us to understand and investigate the topic taught by lecturer.

Assignment 1

Objective: 
This assignment enables me to go into a greater depth of the meanings of these technical terms. It also consolidate what I had learnt in construction technology, principles of structure and properties of materials.

Learning Outcome:
Throughout this assignment, I explore, investigate and understand the meaning of technical term and it will  increase my confidence level when I graduate. This knowledge will be applied to hold conversation and talk intelligently with technical people in the construction industry.

Assignment 2

Objective: 

This assignment enables me to study and understand the different types of certificate issued by the certificate according to PAM 2006 Contract. It also enable to learn the role of Quantity Surveyor when issuing the certificate.

Learning Outcome: 

This assignment enable me to investigate the different types of certificate issued by Architect. There are 7 certificate which is interim certificate,certificate of practical completion, Certificate of Non-Completion, Certificate of Extension of Time and Certificate of Making Good Defects, Penultimate Certificate and Final Certificate. Besides that, it provides me a chance to study and investigate the purpose of issue of each certificate, timing to issue the certificate, contractual effect of issue the certificate and failure to issue the certificate by Architect. I also find out the specimen of the certificate for this assignment.

Objective:

 

This subject enable me to study and explore the the importance of preparation of Tender Document and the importance of the ability to work effectively with teammates to complete the assignments.Besides that it provide me a chance to investigate and explore subject knowledge on the principles of measurement of various elements.Furthermore,it enable me to develop the skill of making decision and management skills related to quantity surveying profession in the preparation of Bills of Quantities.
 
 
Learning Outcomes :
 
 
Throughout the process of learning the course of Measurement 5, I will be able to  identify the items measurable for cold water and sanitary plumbing, electrical installation and M & E works and civil engineering works.Besides that,I learn how to differentiate and explain the difference in writing up descriptions in accordance to design changes of cold water and sanitary plumbing, electrical installation and M&E works and civil engineering works.I also learn how to evaluate the relationship between specifications, drawings and Bill of Quantities in Tender Documents for cold water and sanitary plumbing , electrical installation and  M & E works and civil engineering works.
This subject also provides me a chance to prepare the measurement for cold water sanitary plumbing , electrical installation and  M & E works and civil engineering works in accordance to Standard Method of Measurement (SMM2) and Malaysian Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement  ( MYCESMM ). Furthermore, I understand and able to carry out the preparation of Bills of Quantities for cold water and sanitary plumbing, electrical installation and M & E works and civil engineering works.

Assignment 

 

Brief:

We are going to form a group which consists of 5 persons and we are going to prepare a complete measurement including the Bill of Quantities of the Electrical Works for the 2 storey bungalow house covering:

a) Sub-main cable from the TNB meter to the Distribution Board
b)  Final sub-circuits for the various lighting ,fan & AC points and socket outlets
c)  Electrical accessories such as switches, socket outlets d)  Any other related electrical works not included in the above 
 
Objective: 
 
1)  To extend and refine skills relating to the measurement and description of building works.
2)  To develop an awareness of the nature , content , and significance of tendering and contractual   documents
3)  To have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the Standard Method of Measurement in taking – off quantities

This subject enables me to comprehend the background, principles and practices and information system of financial system management in relation to construction industry.I also learn how to evaluate capital investment proposals in the construction industry.Furthermore, I comprehend the management of construction organization in terms of managing the business environment, the firm and the staff



 Learning Outcome:

Throughout the process of learning the course of Financial Management, I will be able to determine the appropriateness of financial management systems for different construction projects and implement the accountancy principles and practices in examining the construction company’s finances and accounts. Besides that, I learn to determine the appropriate cost control structure and technology in ensuring the quality management and total quality management (TQM) of the entire construction performance.This subject also teach me how to analyze the cost and benefit for particular construction project by applying capital investment techniques.It also teach me how to manage the financial aspect of the particular construction project by manipulating the sound of knowledge of financial management and apply the proper management theory and technique to outline the business of construction project.Furthermore it enhance motivation and performance of company towards career progression by organizing the staff’s tasks, organization and leadership
